The Remix - Although Diddy likes to say that Bad Boy invented the remix, the refurbishing of a hot single has been going on for a while. We always thought that the remix was done to enhance or improve the original. The remix is so important to Hip-Hip that there are many times when the remix is so good that it makes folks forget about the original (see: "One More Chance" by Notorious B.I.G. or "I Got Cha Open" by Black Moon). Some artists have done this effortlessly and some have tried with mixed results. Recently SCRATCH Magazine listed it's version of the Top 25 Remixes of All Time (see list below). We at Grown Folks Hip-Hop would like to hear your thoughts on SCRATCH's list. What song did they leave off? What joint should be taken off? Is it a remix if the song has the same beat but different MCs or verses? Are you in agreement with their choices (you know we have some ideas)? As my people down bottom would say, "Holla at ya folk!!!"

I agree with JPaz. The fact that "The World is Yours" remix isn't listed feds me up. I also don't agree with "Shut 'Em Down" coming in at #1. Although I remember bangin' that a whole lot in the mid 90's. Some joints I was feeling that didn't make the cut are the "I'm Going Down" remix w/ MJB and Mr. Cheeks. The "Tonight's Da Night" remix by Red is one of my personal favorites along with "Wake Up" by the Brand Nubians. Real talk, "Jinglin' Baby" should be higher too. LL was in a rut after that Walkin With a Panther album and Jinglin Baby helped him get his swag back (the Mama Said Knock You Out album was cold and I don't even like LL like that). The "Get By" remix with Talib, Mos, Busta, Kanye and Hov is crazy too. I know I'm forgetting a bunch of songs, but these are the joints that stick out in my mind.
The remix was not invented in the 90s but it was definitely revolutonized in hip hop and R&B in the 90s. Especially by the Bad Boy camp with numerous cameos on each of the remixes. Flava In Ya Ear, Can't You See with Lil Kim and Foxy on the same track. Mary J, SWV, and Aaliyah made remix albums. Who else waited for R. Kelly to remix his songs on 12 Play as well as many others he did? Different lyrics and sometimes different beats. The early Rocafella camp, Wu-Tang, SWV also had memorable remixes. Destiny's child made their first hit with a remix to No, No, No. We didn't even know it was a remix because the original was so corny! My point is that I miss the remix! I know you are thinking, "there are still remixes." No they are not! "Remixes" today have people who are not in the studio with the other artists. Sometimes rappers are on R&B tracks with verses that have nothing to do with the song! Verses would be the same as the original. R. Kelly still hits us off with a remix every now and then. But most of these "remixes" are not remixes! They are loop overs! Some artists might not even know their song got remixed until they hear a mixtape or hear it on the radio.
Here is couple that I think should have made the greatest remixes of all time.

R. Kelly-Your Body's Callin', Bump N' Grind, Ignition, Down Low, Step In The Name of Love, Unfinished Business feat Jay-Z (All Remixes)
Flava In Ya Ear (Remix) Craig Mack had a memorable original but an even more memorable remix including Biggie Smalls, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, and Rampage
Girls, Girls, Girls Remix- Jay-Z the remix was a bonus track on the Blueprint album
My Mind Right remix Memphis Bleek feat Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel
New York State of Mind- Nas- a classic song but the remix included Alicia Keys and Rakim (whom the sample "New York State of Mind" came from in a song called Mahogony)
Made You Look remix Nas feat Ludacris and Jadakiss
Excuse Me Miss (remix) Jay-Z original on Blueprint 2 remix on Bad Boys II soundtrack
Only You-112 original feat. Biggie remix feat. Ma$e
Can It Be All So Simple-The ill combo of Ghostface and Raekwon

Freakin' You Remix-Jodeci feat Raekwon and Ghostface. "You got stacks like International House of Pancakes . . ." Hot!!! Should be on the list!
This is of course my first installment of many more.
I would list the "Freakin' You" remix among one of the best R&B/Hip-Hop collabs of all time. Bully you may just have birthed another topic. The "Touch It" remix is crazy as was the "Flava in Ya Ear" joint. How did Ramp get on with that and does anybody know what the hell LL was talking about. His verse made no sense. B.I.G. and Busta killed that track.
I forgot about the "Can It Be So Simple" remix. Rae murdered that.
On the Run!!!!! "I got a job with the mob making G's, doing stick-ups, deliveries and transportin keys." Kool G was a beast. There are not too many people who have even heard that joint. As hot as the Scenario remix was, I still like the original better. The world is Yours remix should be on here because of the video alone. It only air about 5 times, because the whole video was scenes of people boosting, doing stick-ups, robbing foreigners, etc. Q-Tip is a very underrated producer.
